Why Your Jawline Changes With Age, and What Can Be Done About It

The jawline is often the first place a face begins to look tired. Here is what is actually changing beneath the skin, and the treatments that work on each part of it.

It Is Not Just the Skin

When people notice their jawline softening, they usually blame loose skin. Skin is part of it, but it is the last layer in a longer story. Beneath it, four things are changing at the same time.

  1. Bone

The jawbone itself gradually loses volume and definition with age. The angle of the jaw becomes less distinct and the chin can recede slightly, which removes some of the scaffolding that the soft tissue rests on.

  2. Fat

The fat pads of the face shrink in some places and descend in others. Fat that once sat high on the cheek slowly moves down and gathers along the jaw as jowls.

  3. Ligaments and skin

The ligaments that anchor the skin to the deeper structures loosen, and collagen and elastin decline. The skin has less spring, so it follows gravity.

  4. Muscle

Some muscles, like the one that pulls the corners of the mouth down, begin to drag the lower face downward. Others, like the masseter, can enlarge and widen the jaw from the side.

A jawline rarely softens for one reason. It softens because four layers have each shifted a little, at the same time.

Why One Treatment Rarely Fixes It

Because the cause has several layers, a treatment that addresses only one tends to disappoint. Tightening skin over bone that has lost volume gives a limited result. Adding volume to a jaw that is being pulled down by an overactive muscle can make the lower face look heavier. The plan works when it follows the anatomy.

Three Interventions That Actually Work

  1. Restoring structure with filler

Carefully placed filler along the angle of the jaw and at the chin rebuilds the scaffolding that bone loss has taken away. Done well, it sharpens the line from ear to chin and makes jowls less prominent, without looking added.

  2. Relaxing the muscles that pull down

Small doses of Botox into the muscles that drag the corners of the mouth and the neck downward can give the lower face a subtle lift. Where the masseter is enlarged, treating it slims the jaw from the side.

  3. Lifting and tightening the tissue

PDO threads reposition soft tissue and stimulate new collagen along their path, which helps where jowls have begun to form. For fullness beneath the chin, dedicated treatments target the fat itself.

If you are considering threads, PDO Thread Lifts: What Nobody Tells You Before You Book covers what they can and cannot do.

What About Surgery?

For significant skin laxity, a surgical lift will do things that injectables and threads cannot. A good doctor says so when it is true. Non-surgical treatment gives its best results in early to moderate change, and as maintenance that slows the process down.

Where to Begin

The right first step is not choosing a treatment. It is working out which of the four layers has changed most in your face. That is what a facial profiling assessment is for, and it is why two people with similar jowls can leave with very different plans.

Common Questions

How long does jawline filler last?

Filler along the jaw and chin tends to last longer than filler in more mobile areas, often a year or more, depending on the product and on how quickly your body breaks it down.

Can Botox slim my jaw?

If the width comes from an enlarged masseter muscle, yes. The slimming builds over several weeks and lasts several months. If the width comes from bone or fat, Botox will not help, which is why assessment comes first.

Is a double chin part of the same problem?

Often, yes. Fullness beneath the chin blurs the jawline from the front and the side. Depending on its cause, it is treated by reducing the fat, lifting the tissue, or adding structure at the chin.
