A double chin is not always caused by the same thing.

For one person, the main concern may be localised fullness beneath the chin. For another, it may be loose skin. For someone else, the appearance may come from a combination of fat, skin laxity and the underlying shape of the chin and jaw.

That distinction matters because different treatments address different problems.

Double chin injections, threads and the V-Line are not interchangeable treatments.

So before choosing a procedure, it is worth understanding what each one is designed to address, and what it cannot do.

Double Chin Injections vs Threads vs V-Line: At a Glance

Treatment Primarily addresses Approach Best suited to
Fat-dissolving injections Localised submental fat Injectable Carefully selected patients where fat is the main concern
PDO threads Skin/tissue laxity and contour Thread-based treatment Selected patients where laxity contributes to the concern
BluOrchid V-Line Treatment Submental fat and lower-face contouring Cannula-based fat removal Patients assessed as suitable for a more comprehensive contouring approach

The important point is that one treatment is not necessarily better than the others in every case.

The right choice depends on your anatomy, the amount and location of tissue beneath the chin, skin quality and the result you are trying to achieve.

1. Fat-Dissolving Injections for a Double Chin

Fat-dissolving injections are designed to reduce localised fat.

Certain injectable fat-reduction treatments use deoxycholic acid to disrupt fat cells. Deoxycholic acid is an established injectable approach for reducing submental fat, although treatment protocols and products vary and should not be assumed to be interchangeable.

For someone whose main concern is a relatively small amount of fat beneath the chin, an injectable approach may be worth discussing.

The advantage

The major attraction is that there is no surgical removal of fat.

Treatment is performed through injections into the area being treated, and the reduction develops gradually rather than immediately.

The limitation

Injections are fundamentally a fat-reduction approach.

They are not designed to remove significant amounts of tissue in the same way as a fat-removal procedure, and they do not automatically correct loose skin or structural factors contributing to the appearance of a double chin.

Some patients also require more than one treatment session, depending on the treatment used and their individual anatomy.

There can also be temporary swelling, bruising, discomfort and firmness after treatment. Injectable treatment beneath the chin also has important anatomical risks that need to be discussed during consultation.

Who might consider injections?

They may be appropriate for someone with:

  • A relatively small area of submental fat
  • Reasonably good skin quality
  • A preference for a non-surgical approach
  • Realistic expectations about gradual change

The key is selection.

If the appearance of the double chin is mainly caused by loose skin or facial structure, simply reducing fat may not produce the change you expect.

2. PDO Threads for a Double Chin

Threads are different.

They are not primarily a fat-removal treatment.

A thread-based approach may be considered when skin or tissue laxity is contributing to a less-defined lower face or neck.

The principle is therefore different from an injectable fat-reduction treatment.

Instead of focusing primarily on reducing fat, threads are used to reposition or support tissue and improve contour in appropriately selected patients.

The advantage

Threads may be useful when the concern involves mild laxity or a loss of definition rather than a substantial amount of submental fat.

They can therefore have a place in a treatment plan where simply removing fat would not address the whole problem.

The limitation

Threads do not remove a pocket of submental fat.

If the main reason your double chin is visible is excess fat beneath the chin, a treatment aimed primarily at tissue support may not address that underlying fullness.

Threads also have their own considerations, including the possibility of swelling, bruising, discomfort, asymmetry, visibility or palpability of threads and other complications.

This is why the assessment should come before deciding that a thread treatment is the answer.

3. What Is the BluOrchid V-Line Treatment?

The BluOrchid V-Line Treatment is a more comprehensive approach to lower-face and double-chin contouring.

Rather than relying on injections to gradually reduce a small amount of fat, the V-Line uses a cannula-based approach to remove targeted submental fat and contour the area.

At BluOrchid, the treatment is performed under local anaesthesia and is designed around the individual’s anatomy and desired profile.

The procedure itself is one part of the process.

The consultation determines whether the V-Line is appropriate in the first place.

How Is the V-Line Different From Injections?

The biggest difference is the way the fat is addressed.

With injectable fat reduction, a medication is injected into the treatment area and the body gradually clears the affected fat cells.

With the V-Line, targeted fat is physically removed through a cannula-based procedure.

That makes the V-Line a fundamentally different approach.

It is closer to a contouring procedure than a simple injectable treatment.

For appropriately selected patients, this can be particularly relevant when the concern is more than a very small pocket of fat.

What About Threads vs the V-Line?

This comparison is slightly different because the treatments are targeting different contributors.

Think of it this way:

Threads → primarily address laxity and tissue positioning.

V-Line → addresses targeted submental fat and contouring.

That does not mean that every person with a double chin needs the V-Line.

If skin laxity is the dominant issue, removing fat alone may not be the right answer.

And if the concern is primarily a small amount of localised fat with good skin quality, a less invasive option may be appropriate.

The purpose of assessment is to determine which problem you are actually trying to solve.

Which Double Chin Treatment Is Best?

There is no universal “best” treatment.

The better question is:

What is causing my double chin?

If localised fat is the primary issue, an injectable fat-reduction treatment may be considered.

If laxity is a significant contributor, threads may have a role in selected patients.

If there is a more substantial pocket of submental fat and the goal is more comprehensive contouring, the V-Line may be considered.

And sometimes the answer involves a combination of factors.

Your treatment should therefore be based on your anatomy rather than whichever procedure happens to be trending online.

What If I’m Slim but Still Have a Double Chin?

This is one of the most important distinctions.

You do not have to be overweight to have submental fullness.

Genetics, facial anatomy, chin projection and the distribution of soft tissue can all influence how the area beneath your chin looks.

If you are already slim, losing more weight may not necessarily change the area significantly.

A clinical assessment can help determine whether the concern is actually:

  • Localised fat
  • Skin laxity
  • Chin or jaw structure
  • A combination of these factors

That assessment can change the treatment recommendation entirely.

Is the V-Line Permanent?

The V-Line is designed to physically remove targeted fat cells from the treated area.

Once fat cells are removed, they do not simply grow back as the same cells. However, the remaining fat cells in the body can still enlarge with weight gain, and the appearance of the area can also change over time because of ageing and other factors.

For that reason, “permanent” should not be interpreted as “your profile can never change again.”

The goal is targeted, long-lasting contour improvement, with appropriate expectations and maintenance of a stable weight.

How Do You Choose Between Them?

A useful way to think about the decision is:

Choose injections when…

Your primary concern appears to be a relatively small amount of localised fat and you prefer a non-surgical approach.

Consider threads when…

Skin or tissue laxity is an important part of the concern and you have been assessed as an appropriate candidate.

Consider the V-Line when…

The concern involves more significant submental fullness and you want a more comprehensive fat-removal and contouring approach.

But these are starting points, not self-diagnoses.

Two people can have what looks like the same double chin in a photograph and require completely different treatment plans.

What Happens at a Consultation?

At BluOrchid, treatment selection begins with assessment.

The clinician considers the shape of your lower face, the area beneath your chin, the amount and distribution of tissue, skin quality and the overall relationship between your chin, jawline and neck.

You can then discuss which treatment, if any, makes sense for your anatomy.

This matters because the goal should not simply be to make the area smaller.

It should be to create a balanced profile.

Double Chin Treatments: The Bottom Line

If your main concern is… An option that may be discussed
A small amount of localised submental fat Fat-dissolving injections
Skin/tissue laxity PDO threads
More substantial submental fullness requiring targeted fat removal BluOrchid V-Line
A combination of concerns Individualised treatment plan

There is no prize for choosing the most invasive treatment.

And there is no advantage in choosing the least invasive treatment if it cannot address the problem you actually have.

The best treatment is the one that matches the anatomy.

Frequently asked questions

Are double chin injections better than threads?

Not necessarily. They address different concerns. Fat-dissolving injections target localised fat, while threads are primarily considered when tissue laxity and contour are part of the concern.

Is the V-Line better than fat-dissolving injections?

Not for everyone. The V-Line and injectable fat reduction work differently. The V-Line may be considered when more comprehensive removal and contouring of submental fat is appropriate, while injections may suit carefully selected patients with a smaller area of localised fat.

Can threads remove a double chin?

Threads are not primarily a fat-removal treatment. They may be considered when laxity or tissue positioning contributes to the appearance of the lower face.

Can I get a double chin treatment if I am already slim?

Yes. Being slim does not automatically mean that you have no localised submental fullness. The cause of the fullness needs to be assessed before choosing a treatment.

How many injection treatments will I need?

This depends on the specific injectable treatment and your anatomy. Some injectable approaches require multiple sessions rather than one treatment.

Does the V-Line involve surgery?

The BluOrchid V-Line uses a cannula-based fat-removal approach under local anaesthesia. Your clinician will explain the procedure, suitability, recovery and risks during consultation.

Will treating the fat automatically tighten my skin?

Not necessarily. Fat reduction and skin tightening are different concerns. If laxity is significant, removing fat alone may not produce the desired contour.

How do I know which double chin treatment is right for me?

The most reliable way is to have your anatomy assessed by a qualified clinician. The consultation should determine whether fat, laxity, facial structure or a combination is driving the appearance.

The Right Treatment Starts With the Right Diagnosis

A double chin is not one problem.

It can be created by fat, skin, anatomy or a combination of factors, which is why injections, threads and the V-Line should not be treated as interchangeable procedures.

At BluOrchid Aesthetics, the starting point is an assessment of your individual profile and the factors contributing to the concern.

If treatment is appropriate, the recommendation should follow the anatomy, not the trend.
