What Is the Golden Ratio?
Renaissance artists and architects used it deliberately, having observed that structures built to these proportions were perceived by the human eye as inherently beautiful. The reason is not mystical. It is perceptual. The human visual system is wired to read certain proportions as harmonious — and a face built to Golden Ratio proportions does not look constructed. It simply looks right.
How the Golden Ratio Applies to the Face
The Three Horizontal Thirds
A balanced face divides horizontally into three equal thirds: from the hairline to the brow, from the brow to the base of the nose, and from the base of the nose to the chin. When one third is significantly shorter or longer — often as a result of ageing or volume loss — the face reads as subtly off, without the observer identifying exactly why.
The Width-to-Height Ratio
The ideal facial width-to-height ratio approaches 1:1.618. A face that reads as significantly wider or narrower — because of volume loss or structural mass in the wrong places — can be adjusted with precise treatment placement to restore this balance.
The Jawline and Chin Relationship
The width of the lower face relative to the mid-face is one of the most immediately readable proportions. A heavy or wide jaw — often the result of masseter hypertrophy — disrupts this balance. Masseter Botox restores it by slimming the muscle rather than the bone.
The Nose and Lip Relationship
The width of the nose at its base should approximate the inner corners of the eyes. The upper lip should be slightly thinner than the lower in a specific ratio. These proportions govern how our doctors approach filler placement in the perioral area.

The distance between the eyes, in a proportionate face, should approximate the width of one eye. When volume loss around the temples or brow alters the framing of the eyes, it affects this relationship — and the face ages in a way that no skincare product can address.
